Last week, Real Software announced that REALbasic will support Cocoa in 2009 .

I wonder if it has anything to do with this ..

  1. While RB develop for the iPhone would be great. And Real has expressed a desire to do so. I don’t think it’s a practical hope.

Apple has locked in development for iPhone/touch. A necessary evil if security on mobile, connected devices is to be maintained.

So, if Real is to develop for iPhone/touch, it must do one of two things:

1 – Get Apple’s permission and support to create a second development environment for iPhone. I really don’t think this is likely.

2 – Work outside Apple ecosystem. Create a way for RB developed apps to run on jail-broken phones. I doubt Real will go this route. If it did, as a developer, I’d rather develop in Objective-C/Cocoa than run on jail-broken phones.

The article pointed to was written before the release of the first iPhone SDK beta, before the announcement of the App Store. Before we had into on signatures and deployment of apps.

I wish I could develop in RB for iPhone/touch. I just don’t think it will happen.

  2. I doubt it. Geoff had said long ago that they’d like to be able to target the iPhone back when the first iPhones were shipped.

Cocoa support is necessary since Apple’s long term direction has been to deprecate the Carbon UI layer.
